The main role of the Cyclist Corps was reconnaissance and communications but they could provide mobile firepower if required. However, as the war progressed, the nature of trench warfare meant that their tasks did not differ much from the infantry.

Alfred Evans was killed in on 18th February, 1915 while serving with the Cyclist Corps but as yet there is no further information concerning his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. In February, 1915, 8th Division were holding the line around Laventie.
